Should You Renovate Your College Kids Room?

To convert or not to convert? That seems to be the question, doesn’t it? Should you renovate your college kids room? It’s that milestone in life you thought you and your kids would never reach, and now you’re in a dilemma. On the one hand, you’ve been waiting for that in-home gym for a while, on the other hand, it’s not exactly guaranteed that your kids will leave the nest after graduating from college. So what is a potentially empty nester to do?

There are some things to consider during those transition periods in life. Those decisions will be up to you, but below is a general guide and idea log for you to ponder your next move.

Dual or Dedicated Space? In case you still aren’t sure about the function of your new room, you always have the option of a multipurpose room. Your space can double as an office space with room to sleep, or a library that has a loveseat big enough to accommodate one person temporarily. Your local home improvement store will have the necessary tools and equipment to install shelves and space or something like a built-in sofabed or you may decide on a simple pull-out couch. You can also dedicate the room to a renovated guest room, so the hassle of finding a place to sleep won’t be an issue. Whatever you decide to do will have to be up to you. But just in case you’d like an idea about what other possibilities are out there, we have a suggestion list of some cool redecorations we think you’ll love.

Types of Redecorated Rooms:
    • Guest Bedroom. As much as you might enjoy couch surfing or cuddling up in one shared bed with your in-laws over those holiday vacations, having a dedicated guest room is going to be much more convenient for you and your in-laws. A guest room is also a handy compromise for an unsure future for your college kid. Personalize your new space to create an ambiance you and your guests will find welcoming.
    • Office. If you’re one of the growing population of remote workers, having a dedicated office space to create a productive working environment can be just the right decision for those who work from home. This is a chance to build an atmosphere of focus and energy. Lighting and layout of office equipment and decor will make or break a room and transform it into an atmosphere of concentration and productivity.
    • Gym. This is the perfect place to unload all that at-home gym equipment you may have purchased over the last couple of years. The market for in-home gym equipment has boomed over the years, so converting that old bedroom into a gym is easy since most equipment is now designed for that purpose.
    • Meditation or Yoga Room. Lots of people practice mindfulness meditation to center themselves and find ways to alleviate stress. Maybe you could consider this when remodeling your new space. Items like a yoga mat, light workout equipment, candles, incense, oils, neutral colors, and warm lighting will turn any space from a regular room into a meditation space.
    • Library. For avid book readers and magazine collectors alike, the transition from bedroom to library is feasible. Bookshelves are affordable expenses, and easy to put together and display your book collection. If you don’t want to buy brand-new bookshelves, search thrift shops and yardsales for extra book storage. It doesn’t have to be an extensive room with a ladder to reach the highest shelf, just a space that works for you and your interests.
    • Craft Room. For those hobbies that have bits and pieces and need lots of space, turning that spare room into your crafting area does wonders for keeping things organized. Plenty of hobbies require a ton of materials, and keeping those items consolidated in one room makes for an enriching experience while indulging in beads, painting, metalworking, leather bookbinding, knitting, or one of the myriads of crafts out there that bring people joy.
    • Game Room. Families that game together stay together, and a great alternative to setting up a PC or console in the living room is to create a gaming space. This is a great way to customize a setup that is most comfortable for gamers. You can include things like a desk and comfy chair, a mini fridge, or even a smaller couch. Make sure you utilize power strips and cooling devices, as all that equipment will heat the small space very quickly.
    • Media Room. Between the outrageous expense and the fact that the movie theater business has been limping along for quite some time, who wants to go to the theater anyway? Most media these days are set up through one streaming service or another. Investing a little time and money now will please any movie buff in converting that spare room into a media escape.
