But before you make any decisions about storage and how much you need and what you will decide to store, you must first sign your lease. Oftentimes, leases are month-to-month, and their rules are usually written out. These rules can include what you can and can’t store, how much your bill will be, and when your bill is due. The terms of the agreement spell out exactly what is expected of both the landlord and tenant.

But between all of that legal jargon, it can be hard to determine what sort of rights you might have missed while reading between the lines. Storage facilities are not out to scam you out of your money or promise services they can’t deliver on. However, it can be hard to list everything that is allowed versus what is prohibited. This is why we have decided to come up with a Tenant’s Bill of Rights. These are the rights that you, as a tenant of self-storage, are entitled to immediately upon signing your lease.


  1. You have the right to know how much you will be charged. Including any fees, taxes, or deposits required before moving in.
  2. You have the right to upgrade or downgrade. At any point, if you feel you need more room or you rented too much, you can easily change your setup either through direct interaction or by updating through your phone.
  3. You have the right to store whatever you desire – within reason, of course. There are plenty of items that just shouldn’t be left in a storage unit. This includes weapons or explosives, fuel, or any perishables like food.
  4. You have the right to a clean rental. You will be expected to maintain the cleanliness of your own space, but in return facilities also keep up with their buildings by cleaning them and also providing pest control.
  5. You have the right to access your belongings. Most facilities have hours of operation and gate hours, which are usually extended. With electronic security systems and coded entry, access to your items is secure while also remaining accessible.
  6. You have the right to purchase tenant insurance. Your homeowner’s insurance normally does not cover items left in storage, so it is recommended to purchase tenant insurance to ensure the safety of your belongings.


We hold these rights to be self-evident, but not all self-storage facilities are created equal. The lease you sign will have rules and regulations, as well as company policy, though these rules are straightforward.
